Barna the Pedantic

8 05 2008

It’s no secret that I stopped paying much attention to George Barna a while ago. It began when he started trying to predict the future with the statistics he gathered. Soon after that, it seems he wrote a book (or at least had the idea for one) before he gathered the statistics, which generally leads to false conclusions and stray or leading questions in the statistics.

Recently, I have not only heard his latest news, but have heard it repeated through several sites. The verdict from the latest round of polls? Churches are using more media in the church. That’s right folks! Churches are starting to use this thing we call technology -  just like everybody else in the world.

Is this really news? To anyone? Come on George, can’t you ask better questions than that? And why are so many people repeating this message? Was this a surprise to some people? Is it really shocking that many more protestant churches are using power point?

Here is my own version of statistical prophecy on new messages from Barna:

1. Christians breathe as much as non-christians
2. Youth like to be counter-cultural yet long to be accepted
3. Most men struggle with identity and success
4. Most women struggle with their self-image
5. Postmodernism is dead in the water

Did I miss any other REALLY obvious ones?
