Many Youths Disregard Their Virginity Pledges, Harvard Study Says - Los Angeles Times Just read this article at the LA Times about the virginity pledges and their effectiveness. According to the study:
More than half of the adolescents who make the signed public promises give up on their pledges within a year, according to the study released last week.
It’s not exactly new that guilt is not a great motivator. I still hear a lot about this from some organizations. I was even yelled at by one for not letting them use the church I was serving at to do one of their events. Maybe I shoould pledge to be more of a push over. I could always break it in a year, but I would still have paid for this cheesy ring.
Of course some say that the study is not entirely accurate. I am checking their sources.
The thing I don’t like is that people make this into a pledge. Just this one topic and not any other. No pledges for guys keeping their minds pure, or not visiting certain internet sites. No pledges for gossip, drug use, lying, cheating in school, modesty, etc. Even worse, it’s a pledge to not do something. Why not pledge to do something that will move your heart away from those things? How about meet with people once a week and talk about why they want to sleep around in the first place? These pledge campaigns feel like slapping a band-aid on heart disease.
I knwo that some people who have taken these pledges will read this. If you have taken a pledge and have kept it, good for you. If you have broken a pledge, I hope you are not so shamed by it that you feel like you’ve blown it forever. If you’ve never heard of these pledges, well, hmmm…
