Book Review - The Godbearing Life

1 05 2006

I have been reading a lot of books lately, mostly about discipleship and marketing. They don’t necessarily go together but that is what I am processing at the moment. This book has really stuck out from all the rest. I would recommend it both to the new guy on the block who hasn’t had much experience and to the guy who has been in the trenches for a while.

What you will get
This book is not going to tell you a new program or some great games to get kids in the doors. It won’t be flashy or set your mouth watering to have a new event. Instead this book focuses or even possibly re-aligns some thinking about ministry in general and youth ministry. It looks at what we do in youth ministry that actually lasts and what we could/should be focusing our resources and energy on instead of just playing games.

Section one takes a look at the popular ways of doing ministry over the past 50 years and show how we benefitted from those ways and how those ways are not always very helpful. Section three looks more at how to live in ministry and is a great resource for people who are going to stick around for longer than a couple of months. My favorite, is section four that focuses practices in youth ministry.

While not overtly daring, this book presents some great challenges for those who are called to make disciples.
